Tech IPOs aren't all champagne and dump trucks full of cash. Before you jump at Facebook's upcoming offering (set to arrive tomorrow), you might be wise to consider these past catastrophic, scandalous and downright embarrassing tech IPOs as cautionary tales. There were plenty to choose from.

The initial public offering is a right of passage, the first time non-VC investors get a crack at owning a piece of a company. But given the amount of hype circulating in the tech world, it's also usually an occasion for early investors to get an inflated payout and leave lay investors with a rapidly deflating stock. We're not saying it's definitely going to happen when Facebook goes public tomorrow — but it does seem to happen an awful lot. So before you start buying up shares, we've got a few stories for you.

This grocery delivery company is the gold standard of 90s tech-bubble flameouts. It raised $375 million going public in March of 2000. By July of 2001, they'd burned through their operating budget and filed for Chapter 11. Anyone who got in on the IPO was left with bupkis.

The Polo Gear Elite Saddle was developed with polo star Nic Roldan, who boldly claims it is the first major reboot of saddle design in 50 years. He says it is the first to emphasize the comfort of the horse as much as the performance of the athlete riding it.

The controversial new biography of President Barack Obama claims that his wife, Michelle Obama, planned to leave the future president in 2000.
Is the divorce story real? Is anything in the book?
The unauthorized biography, which Klein claims is based on nearly 200 interviews, has been dismissed by presidential spokesperson Eric Schultz.
“Ed Klein has a proven history of reckless fabrication in order to sell books,” he said. “Nobody in their right mind would believe the nonsense in this one.”
Nevertheless, the Obama divorce story is the latest revelation in the book – which also discusses his ex Genevieve Cook – to generate major buzz.
In The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House, out this week, Klein claims the divorce nearly happened eight years into the Obamas’ marriage.
After Obama failed to listen to his wife’s warnings in challenging Bobby Rush for his U.S. House seat in 2000 and got creamed, their relationship cooled.
“During the dark days that followed his defeat, he turned to Michelle for comfort. But she was in no mood for sympathy,” Klein reportedly writes.
“He had refused to listen to her warnings about taking on Rush.”
The primary left them in debt and Barack depressed, Klein claims. “Michelle actually had divorce papers drawn up,” he writes, citing one of her friends.
“Obama was so depressed that some of his friends worried that he was suicidal,” the book adds, without elaboration on that particular point.
Obama, of course, was still in the Illinois State Senate, and went on to win a U.S. Senate seat in 2004 that helped establish his national credentials.
But Michelle almost vetoed the Senate race, too.
Northwestern University professor Steven Rogers told Klein that Obama talked about his ambition after they met at a golf fund-raiser.
“My wife will not allow me to run for the Senate until I clear up the debts from my unsuccessful run for Congress,” Obama said, according to Rogers.

Spacecraft designers look at blueprints for a real-world version of Star Trek’s USS Enterprise.

Characters on Star Trek suffer frequent misadventures on the holodeck, a room that creates advanced holograms indistinguishable from reality. But now theoretical physicists such as Brian Greene, host of the recent PBS special The Fabric of the Cosmos, are starting to wonder if every object in the universe isn’t some sort of hologram. Greene talks physics and science fiction in this week’s episode of the Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy podcast. Hear it, or read the entire transcript, here.

‘I have very strong alliances with these guys that are on this tour with me,’ Drake says of his Club Paradise tourmates.

<P>There are no lightweights on the bill for <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/drake/artist.jhtml">Drake</a>'s <a href="/news/articles/1681570/drake-j-cole-waka-flocka-club-paradise-tour.jhtml">upcoming Club Paradise Tour</a>.</P><P>While hitting the road with J. "I guess it's safe to say now that anybody that I didn't have a song with before, I have a song with now. "Along with this tour, fans are also going to get some exciting musical material that will probably end up dropping a few days before the tour, so that we can perform it on tour," Drizzy said.</P><P>For the Toronto MC, summertime is the best time for new music, and he designed this current amphitheater leg of Club Paradise to come at a time when he plans to release some fresh tunes. "If we start getting into it and we start really vibing, maybe the last few nights, it's a collaboration show, maybe we do all of our songs onstage together."</P><P>Whether fans actually get to see all six MCs rocking at once remains to be seen, but Drizzy does believe that each act will bring their own brand of excitement. Don't arrive fashionably late, he warned.</P><P>"On this tour, I encourage people to get there early, because it's more [of] a festival vibe, if anything," he said. "It's one of those days that's it's going to start during the sunlight and the sun's going to drop, it's outdoors, it's summertime … I want people to make it a day."</P><P>The amphitheater leg of Drake's Club Paradise Tour kicks off May 7 in Concord, California.</P><P><i>Will you be attending the next leg of Drake's Club Paradise Tour?
